God or No God:
a solo piano recital by Ka Jeng Wong
26 August 2019 / 8pm / Recital Studio, Esplanade – Theatre On The Bay
Under the kind support of Presenting Sponsor, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Singapore, we teamed up with Music Lab from Hong Kong to feature award-winning young Hong Kong pianist Ka Jeng Wong (also known as KJ Wong) for a two concert series in Singapore. On 25 Aug, Ka Jeng performed as part of SMASH, a trio made up of KJ himself alongside harmonica world-champion CY Leo and saxophonist Timothy Sun. The audience was charmed by the trio’s 90-minute performance of mash-ups of movie hits, modern classics with traditional Cantonese tunes and gave the performers a standing ovation.
Thereafter on 26 Aug KJ took the audience on a 3-part musical journey in his solo piano recital featuring landmark keyboard works from the 19th and 20th centuries. The continuous 68-minute journey began in Creation with Arvo Pärt’s Fur Alina and György Ligeti’s The Devil’s Staircase, followed by Cycle of Life with Bach-Naoumoff’s Passacaglia in C minor and Arvo Pärt’s Spiegel im Spiegel before finally settling in God with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 29 in B♭ major, Op. 106 (Hammerklavier). The concert was enthusiastically received by the audience and concluded with a brief post concert sharing by KJ on his curatorial process of the concert.
