Hong Kong (2006)

12 – 28 January 2006

Hong Kong was The Old Parliament House’s first venture overseas. At the invitation of Benny Chia, the founder and artistic director of Hong Kong Fringe Club to be the programme partner of its signature event – Hong Kong City Festival’s Spotlight Singapore programme in 2006, The Arts House curated a programme comprising  exhibition of Singapore books; a jazz performance; a 15-minute experimental happening titled Sound Thinking which featured four vacuum cleaners and electronica; and 10 Singapore films.

These programmes ran in tandem with productions from W!ld Rice, Very Special Arts Singapore Ltd and The Necessary Stage and a series of symposiums discussing the outlook of a new cultural Singapore. Together, the 12 programmes of theatre, music, films, books, visual arts, gastronomy, workshops and symposia offered the first glimpses of the City State’s renaissance.

In 2007, TOPH hosted the Fringe Club and presented Spotlight Hong Kong in Singapore. The second edition of Spotlight Hong Kong in Singapore was held at 10 Square in 2015.
