imagin.Asia 2018: Artists Uncovered
28 July 2018 / 7.30pm / Victoria Theatre
July ended on a high note with imagin.Asia, a new concert platform that brought together 60 young talents under 25 years of age from China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Singapore. For the inaugural concert, we were on the lookout for artistes who use the arts as an enabling and empowering medium champion social causes, or whose practice focused on keeping alive a cultural or artistic tradition. Highlights included Nepal’s Rudra Band who featured the seldom-heard string-instrument sarangi , Hong Kong’s Willis Tsoi contemporary take with the suona (double-reeded horn) and Laos’ Khaoniew Theatre Group who advocates for the inclusion of deaf persons in their practice. The finale which was written by 13-year-old Singaporean Isaiah Hui and performed by all musicians with sign language tugged at the audience’s heartstrings. We were honoured to work with theatre director, Jeremiah Choy with music director, Philip Tan for this initiative. The concert was powered by National Youth Council and supported by The Arts Fund.
